Arkansas is home to the Eastern Subterranean Termite (Reticulitermes lavipes). In a colony of Eastern Subterranean Termites, property owners can encounter three types (castes) of termites: Workers, Soldiers, and Swarmers.

Workers and Soldiers will both have a creamy-white color, straight antennae, and a non-segmented body. Workers will measure about 4⁄5 of an inch long and lack mandibles. Soldiers are slightly larger, and have orange heads with black mandibles. The Swarmer class is the most commonly misidentified termite. Appearing strikingly similar to a common flying ant, the termite swarmer differs in its body and wing shape. Similar to the worker and soldier, the swarmer has a non-segmented body, whereas ants will have distinct sections. Regarding wings, termite swarmers have equally sized sets of wings, ants on the other hand, will have one shorter and one longer wing on each side.
